The history of the Ofori family is deeply intertwined with the political, spatial, and social development of Kumasi. This history is particularly significant for understanding the establishment and growth of Oforikrom, now the capital of the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region. Home to more than 50,000 residents and major institutions such as the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Oforikrom occupies a central place in Kumasi’s contemporary urban landscape.
Yet the history of the family at the heart of this part of the city’s origins has not been systematically documented. Much of this history currently exists in dispersed forms—personal memories, private archives, photographs, and oral accounts—many of which are at risk of being lost. This website forms part of a larger project dedicated to documenting, preserving, and making this history accessible.
